Scrivener Tutorial 1: Setup, MMD And LaTeX

Since our publication of the double-review of Scrivener last year we’ve been thinking about what else we could show you. So we came up with the idea of recording Scrivener Tutorials showing how to write a proposal, or a thesis, with Scrivener.

This is the first part in a series of screencasts about that topic (or workflow) where we will be showing how to use MultiMarkdown and Scrivener to produce a (perfect) LaTeX document. This episode shows:

  • How to setup Scrivener to work better with MMD
  • A little bit MMD Syntax:
    • Pictures
    • “Quickmath”-Mode

Pictures in MMD

To include a picture in MultiMarkdown follow these simple instructions:

  • The picture should preferably be in the (or a sub-) folder as the Scrivener, or later LaTeX, document.
  • To embed the picture use this Syntax: ![name of picture](path/to/picture.jpg)

Scrivener LaTeX Export

To export a LaTeX document out of Scrivener do the following:

  • Select “Compile Draft” from the File menu
  • In the new window please select to include files in the documents’ structure
  • From the Export-Format popup choose “MMD *→ LaTeX”
  • Click Export
  • Now open the .tex document in TeXShop or TextMate and compile the document
  • Done
